Since 1978, archaeologist and historian Tony Rook has led heritage tours of Welwyn village as part of the annual Welwyn Festival celebrations. Leading groups of visitors on a loop through the village, Tony tells true tales, tall tales, and interesting tidbits, culled from his extensive research into the history of Welwyn and its environs.
The Welwyn Archaeological Society, founded by Tony in the 1960s, has created this website in order to continue Tony’s work and to capture something of the flavour of Rook’s Tours. With the support of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, this site contains images, audio, video and text, all drawn from Rook’s Tours of Welwyn. All the original artwork on these pages is by Tony Rook, unless otherwise noted.
The goal of the website is also to provide a forum for other members of the Welwyn community to add their stories. If you have a Welwyn story to share, add a comment to the website, or download the free Tales of Things app (available for IPhone and Android) to your phone and become a part of Welwyn history.
